Talk on Civil War Monuments
FREDERICK, Maryland—A Hood College professor will discuss Civil War monuments on April 17 at 7 p.m. in Dreiling Seminar Room in Coblentz Hall on campus.
Frederick Bohrer, Ph.D., professor of art history, will give his talk, titled “Monuments, Wars and Monument Wars: Memorializing the Civil War,” providing a context for the current political, cultural and racial disputes surrounding these monuments. He will discuss how monuments signify as much as what they signify, as well as the historical processes through which monuments acquire meaning. Deciding what to do about monuments today must involve a sense of the political and artistic alternatives available.
This lecture is part of the spring colloquium “Memory” series. Funded in part by a National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant, this event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Aaron Angello at 301-696-3211 or angello@hood.edu.
