Biography
I spent nearly 30 years in the newspaper business as a reporter and editor before coming to Hood College to teach journalism.
I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and my love of journalism began while I was still in high school. After receiving my bachelor's degree in journalism, I took a brief detour from the news business to pursue a master degree in history. My Ph.D. studies focused on international journalism, and the topic of my dissertation was the Russian press and the many pressures it faced in the early 1990s.
During my many years at newspapers in Virginia and Maryland, I covered crime, local government, business, and growth and development. I spent 22 years at the Baltimore Sun as a reporter and editor. My positions there included food editor, lifestyles editor, home editor, and eventually general assignment editor for the newspaper's print and online editions.
