Staff Professional Development

Launch Your Career, Learn new Skills, Lead in your Profession

Hood College Professional Development is designed to

  • introduce our employees to the skills and knowledge that are critical for every role in our organization;
  • encourage employees to engage in continuous learning to strengthen and further develop their job skills and knowledge; and
  • identify those employees who have the skills and interest to advance their careers at Hood College and to become leaders in the organization.

We have designed the program around six key areas.  The links below provide information about each area and identify the courses that all staff employees should take to help launch their career in higher education or to strengthen their knowledge even if they have been in their position for a while.

Many of these courses are included on the SafeColleges platform or on the learning platform included on the BHS, our employee assistance program, website. Both require employees to log in so progress can be tracked and employees get credit for the courses taken.  Employees are encouraged to explore additional class offerings on these platforms. Additional courses will be available via internal platforms such as Blackboard. Employees are also encouraged to explore free content on sites such as Coursera and LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com) which is available for free through Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL.org).

If you have an idea for a course, please share it with us!

This page will be updated as we develop our Staff Development Program

A company's ethics will have an influence on all levels of business. It will influence all who interact with the company including customers, employees, suppliers, competitors, etc. All of these groups will have an effect on the way a company's ethics are developed. It is a two way street, the influence goes both ways, which makes understanding ethics a very important part of doing business today. Ethics is very important, as news can now spread faster and farther than ever before.

The compliance track is designed to ensure that employees have the knowledge and skills needed to perform their roles in a manner consistent with both general good practices and with the specific regulatory requirements for their role.

Communication is the basis for how we do our job, and how well we collaborate with each other.  It is also the foundation of how we present ourselves professionally, both internally within the Hood community, and externally to constituents outside of Hood.  These workshops will help hone your ability to communicate clearly and effectively, while building upon your presentation skills to create more focused and audience-friendly presentations.

“Work smarter, not harder” has become a widely used phrase.  Employees are encouraged to use the tools available to them to become more efficient and more productive.  These tools are only useful when employee know where to find them and how to use them.

21 Day Racial Equity Challenge

As staff understand the workings of their own department, all divisions work together to keep the college running efficiently. In efforts to have an impact based on the core values with which we stand, there should be an education on how the college is operating for everyone to work together as one. These workshops will help to understand the structure of the college and build skills to work seamlessly together.
