Reading Clinic
The Summer Reading Clinic is the internship site for graduate students enrolled in the M.S. in reading specialization program. Graduate students serve as clinicians in both an elementary and a secondary clinic. The elementary clinic is a six-week experience for students in kindergarten – fifth grade, beginning in late June. The clinic hours are 9:30 a.m.-noon, Monday through Thursday. The secondary clinic, for students in sixth grade – college, consists of two three-week sessions; one beginning in late June and one beginning in mid-July. The clinic hours are from 9:30 a.m.-noon, Monday through Thursday.
The Hood College Elementary Reading Clinic provides children with an opportunity to improve reading, writing, spelling and word study skills. An analysis of reading comprehension, reading fluency, writing and spelling is followed by prescriptive instruction planned to meet each child’s academic needs. To be accepted into the clinic the child must be a remedial reader, reading at least one grade level below his/her current school placement. Hood College graduate students create the diagnostic profile and provide meaningful instruction while supervised by elementary reading specialists and Dr. Ellen Koitz, director of the elementary reading clinic.
The Hood College Secondary Reading Clinic provides an effective way to enhance the academic potential and success of a student in grades 6 to 12. This experience provides students an opportunity to improve reading and study skills. An analysis of reading comprehension, reading rate, and current study and test-taking skills is followed by prescriptive instruction planned to meet each student’s academic success needs. Hood College graduate students create the diagnostic profile and provide meaningful instruction while supervised by Secondary Literacy Specialists and Dr. Chris Helfrich, director of the secondary reading clinic.
