1-1:50 p.m. The Biomedical Research and Training Center: With Cherry Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, and Meredith Yeager, M.S.’96, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology and director of the biomedical science master’s program, Hodson Science and Technology Center, room 131

Professors Cherry Liu, Ph.D., and Meredith Yeager, M.S.’96, Ph.D., discuss the teaching partnerships with Kite Pharma and the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC). Liu and Yeager will share how their courses in cell therapy, bioforensics and biodefense enhance student learning through hands-on, real-world experiences, preparing students to enter the local bio manufacturing workforce. Learn how students work with researchers to analyze biological threats and the role that the NBACC plays in solving national security issues. Both partnerships are the first pilot projects of the Biomedical Research and Training Center.

Professor David Gurzick, M.S.’03, Ph.D., describes how generative AI can be a power tool for modern workers, enabling them to tackle complex challenges with unprecedented efficiency and innovation. In this engaging workshop, you’ll learn how to wield generative AI to drive problem solving, optimize processes and create value in your organization. Through case studies and hands-on exercises, you’ll gain the essential knowledge and skills needed to strategically implement and manage generative AI solutions, empowering you to drill down into the most pressing issues and construct a competitive advantage for your business.

eSports Head Coach Spencer Weed will teach you all you ever wanted to know about the “sport without boundaries.” eSports, or electronic sports, refers to the competitive play of video games, often organized into structured tournaments and leagues. This beloved tradition is created and presented annually by the 50th reunion class. This year, the Class of 1974 has chosen their class motto, “Worlds to Explore in ’74,” as their theme. Through song and statement, they have created a program that showcases the different “worlds” they have experienced since they graduated 50 years ago. Everyone is welcome to join them at Coffman Chapel, as they close Reunion 2024 with this very meaningful and unique service.

2024 Alumni and Faculty Award Recipients

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD
Margery L. Elfin, Ph.D.
Professor Emerita

We are honored to present our inaugural Distinguished Faculty Award to Professor Emerita Margery Elfin, Ph.D. During her tenure at Hood, Elfin was not only a professor to many Hood students, but also a trusted mentor, adviser and friend. She earned her B.A. at the New School in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and her Ph.D. at Columbia University. She served as the Virginia E. Lewis Professor of Politics and chair of the Department of History and Political Science. A scholar, educator and published author, Elfin and her husband Mel, a revered journalist in his own right, often invited students to their Washington, D.C., home for dinner and a chance for vibrant conversations on contemporary topics. As a testament to Elfin and her influence, several Hood alumnae established a scholarship in her name to honor the incredible impact she and political science colleague, Carol Kawecki, had on them as students and then alumnae. After retirement, Elfin continued to be involved with the College; she joined the Board of Trustees in 2008 and served until 2016. Elfin’s influence on her former students continues to this day.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA AWARD
Kimberly B. Roth ’04, Ph.D.

Kimberly Roth ’04, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the community medicine department at Mercer University School of Medicine. Roth double majored in Spanish and psychology while at Hood. After graduation, she worked at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health on a men’s HIV study, where she fell in love with public health and epidemiology. This spurred her on to obtain her master’s in health science and then, after working several more years, a Ph.D. from the Department of Mental Health at Johns Hopkins. Her dissertation involved investigating the relationship between acculturative experiences and mental and behavioral disorder within the Latinx community. Since joining the faculty at Mercer, she has been involved with community-based suicide prevention as well as delivering mental and behavioral health services to Georgia farmworkers. When not at work, Roth loves to knit, read and garden. She now calls Savannah, Georgia, home, and lives in an old Victorian house with her husband and five mischievous cats.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA AWARD
Carol Deck Montoya ’94

Carol Deck Montoya ’94 is one of two recipients of this award. Montoya is president of Potomac Management Resources (PMR), an association management and event planning company in Alexandria, Virginia. The company currently serves 14 nonprofit organizations, ranging from less than 100 members to more than 6,000. The combined membership of PMR’s clients is more than 11,000 people. In managing the operations for each of these nonprofits, PMR is responsible for more than $4.3 million in operating budgets. Outside of the office, Montoya volunteers with the National Capital Soccer League, the Lee-Mount Vernon Sports Club and the Edison High School Boosters. As a parent to future Hood alumna Sofia, Class of 2026, Montoya is a member of Hood’s Parents Advisory Council. She also proudly serves as her class reporter and reunion co-chair. Montoya and her husband Rolando were married in Coffman Chapel in 2002. They also have a son, Benjamin, two pit bull mixes and a cat named Cat.

EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE TO HOOD COLLEGE AWARD
Susan L. Whaley ’74, J.D.

Susan L. Whaley ’74, J.D., came to Hood College in 1970 on a Senatorial Scholarship as the first person in her family to attend college. Graduating with a B.A. in history, Whaley then earned her J.D. from University of Maryland School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1978. In law school, she worked for a title company abstracting titles, a job that combined her love of history and law, which led her to a career in real estate. Following a significant sale, Whaley endowed a scholarship to honor her former Hood roommate. In 2012, she joined the Board of Trustees and was a key part of the searches for both President Chapdelaine and Provost Ricker. As co-chair of the Forging the Future: The Campaign for Hood College committee, Whaley was instrumental in helping the Campaign exceed its goal of $50M. She has lived in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, since 1995. Whaley loves traveling and often visits NYC for museums, Broadway shows and opera at the Met. She still enjoys playing bridge, which she learned in the “Smoker” in Memorial Hall.

On-Campus Housing:

On-campus housing in Blazer Hall is available June 6-8 for $50 per person, per night. Blazer Hall rooms are suite and semi-suite style with a shared bathroom and twin beds, including bedding (sheets, blankets, pillow and pillowcases), towels, washcloths and soap. Reserve with your paper registration form or online by May 24, 2024

- If you have reserved a room in Blazer Hall for Reunion 2024, you are welcome to use the main floor lounge to relax and reconnect!
- Help yourself to the complimentary coffee and snacks.
- You may use the main floor kitchen and refrigerator. We ask that you label all items with your first and last name and your class year. All items left in the fridge after checkout at noon on Sunday will be discarded.
- If you tend to "run cold," you may want to BYOB (Bring Your Own Blanket) to supplement the available blankets in Blazer Hall
- Your Blazer Hall key card allows you access to the main entrances and your assigned room and floor ONLY.
- Should you lose your key card, please contact campus safety at 301-696-3548 for assistance. Note: there is a $25 charge for lost Blazer Hall key cards.
- If there are any significant problems or issues while you are in Blazer Hall, you can call the switchboard (staffed 24 hrs) at 301-696-3131 or security at 301-696-3548. If there is an emergency call 911.
